The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced 6,000 replacement slots for teachers to address staffing gaps caused by natural attrition. This significant recruitment effort, shared during the 64th Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Annual Delegates Conference in Mombasa, comes as over 10,000 teachers are set to retire by December.

The upcoming replacements will focus on filling gaps left by retiring classroom teachers and school administrators. However, all eyes are on TSC following past controversies. In 2023, despite receiving a Ksh. 2.5 billion budget allocation for teacher replacement, the commission faced backlash for alleged irregularities, including backdoor hiring and favoritism. Reports surfaced of politicians influencing recruitment and some teachers paying as much as Ksh. 400,000 to secure jobs.

This sparked public outrage, particularly among youth, leading to a cabinet reshuffle by the president. Moving forward, TSC has emphasized adherence to its guidelines, including requiring teachers to complete a one-year internship program before securing permanent positions.
The internship program aims to provide hands-on teaching experience through mentorship and coaching. Intern teachers will receive a monthly stipend of Ksh. 20,000, subject to deductions, with many current interns having already served for two years.
In related news, TSC recently recruited 20,000 teachers on internship terms for junior secondary schools, with postings set for January. Additionally, 46,000 interns will transition to permanent terms by January 2025.
