The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to prioritize the promotion of over 30,000 teachers, particularly those in C4 and C5 job groups, starting in 2025. This decision comes after mounting pressure from the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), which has been advocating for teachers’ career growth.
For years, many educators—some with over seven years in the same grade—have been overlooked, with KUPPET estimating that nearly 50,000 teachers** across various grades are stuck in stagnation. During a high-level meeting in Naivasha, the union urged the government to allocate Ksh1 billion** to TSC for immediate promotions, aiming to address the long-standing frustrations among educators.
KUPPET Secretary-General Akelo Misori emphasized that C4 teachers will move to C5 , while their C5 counterparts will be elevated to D1,, creating room for Grade C3 teachers who have been awaiting advancement. The move promises to ease stagnation, boost morale, and reward long-serving educators.
One significant concern remains the 7,400 teachers in C4 who were left out of promotions during the 2023-2024 period because they had been in the grade for under three years. Misori clarified that these teachers deserve fair consideration since they were only promoted to C4 two years ago, following years of stagnation in Grade C3 and the former Job Group L.
With TSC’s renewed focus, 2025 is poised to be a transformative year for Kenya’s education workforce. The planned promotions will not only recognize teachers’ hard work but also ensure career progression aligns with the service teachers provide to the nation.
