TSC CEO Nancy Macharia highlighted the high demand for Kenyan teachers skilled in teaching English, Kiswahili, Islamic Religious Education (IRE), Science, and Special Needs Education (SNE). Countries such as the USA, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, Qatar, and China have expressed keen interest. For instance, Kiswahili teachers are in demand in France, Botswana, and Japan, while English teachers are sought in Canada, Vietnam, and South Korea.

This program is part of a government-to-government labor export strategy designed to ensure transparent and fair placement of teachers abroad. To qualify, candidates must hold relevant educational certifications, meet TSC registration requirements, and fulfill Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution. Additional host country-specific requirements such as language proficiency or specialized training may apply.

Selected teachers will undergo an orientation program addressing security, cultural sensitivity, career guidance, and more. TSC will also advocate for standard employment contracts detailing salaries, benefits, housing, and insurance to protect teacher interests. Teachers on permanent employment must resign from TSC to take up these roles but can reapply for vacancies upon their return.

Critics, however, have raised concerns over Kenya’s teacher shortage and potential exploitation in foreign markets. Nonetheless, proponents argue this initiative enhances professional growth, cultural exchange, and economic contributions through remittances.

By venturing into global education markets, Kenyan teachers will not only uplift their careers but also strengthen the nation’s global educational footprint. This strategic initiative promises a win-win scenario for educators and the economy alike.
