The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled the new salary scale for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers employed under permanent and pensionable terms. Salaries vary based on the teacher’s location, with those working in municipal or hardship areas earning slightly higher than their counterparts in regular zones.
TSC ensures that teachers not only receive competitive salaries but also enjoy several allowances, including:
– Housing Allowance
– Commuting Allowance
– Hardship Allowance
– Risk Contributions
These allowances significantly boost monthly earnings, adding to the basic salary. Additionally, teachers benefit from health insurance, pension plans, and other perks funded by the government.
Salary Scales for JSS Teachers
Teachers deployed to teach in Junior Secondary Schools under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) start at job grade C2. This includes newly hired teachers with bachelor’s degrees in education (secondary option) who meet the minimum qualification of a C+ average in KCSE and a C+ in two teaching subjects.
Newly employed JSS teachers earn a basic salary ranging between Ksh. 34,955 and Ksh. 43,694 per month. After three years of service, they are automatically promoted to job grade C3, as outlined in the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG).
