A primary school teacher from Kilifi County has expressed deep regret over missing a golden opportunity to advance his career due to unfinished university studies.
Samuel Mudasha, 37, shares how his dream of becoming a Junior Secondary School teacher under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) fell apart. Despite meeting the qualifications for a Bachelor’s degree in Education (Secondary Option) and enrolling at Pwani University to study Geography and Kiswahili, Samuel’s plans were derailed by financial challenges.

Coming from a humble background, he took a loan to support his education. However, he used part of the funds to pay dowry for his wife, believing the remaining amount would cover his tuition. Unfortunately, unforeseen family responsibilities depleted the funds, leaving him unable to complete the final two semesters of his 12-session program.
“I regret not completing my degree. This decision has cost me a chance to secure a promotion and better my life,” Samuel laments.

Determined to correct his past mistake, he has now applied for a loan to complete his studies. He hopes to join the ranks of deployed teachers earning competitive salaries in Junior Secondary Schools.
Recently, TSC reopened its application portal for P1 teachers seeking deployment to Junior Secondary Schools. To qualify, applicants must hold a minimum of a Diploma in Education with strong grades in teaching subjects and meet other specific requirements.
The Commission has been under pressure to expand deployment opportunities, allowing more teachers to transition into Junior Secondary roles. Successful candidates are placed in higher job groups, with salaries ranging from Ksh 34,955 to Ksh 50,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
Samuel’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of education and careful financial planning in pursuing career goals.
