Good News As TSC Plans To Promotes Veteran Deputy Heads To Leadership Roles . TSC Announces Automatic Promotions for Deputy Headteachers to Fill Leadership Gaps
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is implementing an automatic promotion plan to address a growing number of vacant headship roles in Kenyan schools. This move comes after the mass retirement of headteachers on June 30, 2023, which left many schools in need of new leadership. The TSC has instructed County Directors to compile information on deputy headteachers with at least eight years of service, using a standardized Excel template, to identify qualified candidates for these roles.
TSC plans to promote 12,000 teachers in the 2024-2025 financial year, with 9,000 promotions allocated to primary schools and 3,000 to secondary schools. To expedite the process, Curriculum Support Officers are gathering additional information on deputy headteachers in grade C4 within primary schools, who will be placed in acting headship positions in sub-county schools with vacancies.
In a similar initiative last year, TSC advertised 35,505 promotion vacancies, including 1,049 spots for primary deputies advancing from grade C4 to C5. This promotion drive also included the advancement of 30 deputies in special primary schools to headteacher roles and 541 deputy principals promoted from job group D2 to D3 as principals.
TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia reported that 36,504 teachers were promoted during the 2023-2024 fiscal year, increasing the total number of promoted teachers over the past five years to 71,212. She further emphasized that the government has allocated an additional 1 billion shillings for teacher promotions in the upcoming financial year, highlighting the commitment to strengthening leadership across the education sector.
This initiative aims to ensure that schools are equipped with experienced leaders, enhancing educational standards across the country.
