TSC To Redeploy Excess Secondary & Primary Teachers To JSS Starting January On This Date. TSC to Address Teacher Shortages by Deploying Primary Teachers to Special Schools and Junior Secondary.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled plans to deploy practicing primary school teachers to special schools and junior secondary institutions across the country by the end of the month, aiming to tackle the current teacher shortage.

During a recent appearance before the Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia highlighted the surplus of 18,057 teachers in the primary education sector, a result of the recent introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) that eliminated classes 7 and 8.

Dr. Macharia announced that the TSC will assign 3,600 teachers from both primary and secondary schools to special education schools and units. This initiative is part of a phased deployment strategy due to budget constraints, with further deployments expected in January and June of next year. The focus will be on teachers holding Diplomas and Degrees in Special Needs Education (SNE), as there is an urgent need for 5,362 more teachers in special schools nationwide.
Additionally, Macharia noted that in May 2024, the TSC hired and deployed 1,763 teachers to address these shortages. Primary school teachers with SNE diplomas will be assigned to relevant positions within special schools and units based on their qualifications.
Looking ahead, Dr. Macharia revealed that junior secondary schools require a staggering 70,000 teachers to effectively manage grades 7, 8, and 9. To meet this demand, the TSC is preparing to deploy over 20,000 Primary Teacher Education (PTE) teachers, who hold various diplomas and degree certifications in education.
