Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, has announced that Grade 6 learners taking the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will not receive traditional certificates like those issued for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE). Instead, students will receive a detailed report showcasing their performance across subjects.

On October 28, over 1.3 million Grade 6 students commenced their KPSEA examinations, which are part of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This year’s assessment focuses on six subjects condensed into five papers: Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Science, and Social Studies and Creative Arts.

The KPSEA is designed to support a smoother transition to Junior Secondary School (JSS) and aims to create a more relaxed testing environment, emphasizing competency-based assessment. Notably, the government has reduced police presence in schools, allowing only invigilators, supervisors, and authorized personnel to facilitate a stress-free experience for the students. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that security personnel will only escort exam materials to schools.

After completing the KPSEA, learners will automatically advance to Grade 7, as this assessment does not determine placement, unlike the phased-out KCPE. The KPSEA consists of two parts: formative assessments, which account for 60% and are conducted in schools by teachers, and summative assessments, managed by the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec), making up the remaining 40%.
This final assessment marks an important milestone for Grade 6 learners as they prepare for the next stage in their educational journey.
