In an effort to support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will open applications next week for 20,000 new internship positions—2,000 for primary schools and 18,000 for junior secondary schools—on two-year contracts. This recruitment is aimed at addressing teacher shortages, particularly for Grade 9 under CBC.

Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, highlighted the government’s commitment to CBC, noting the construction of 18,000 new classrooms by January next year, with 11,000 funded by development partners and 7,000 through CDF. Kipsang also confirmed that plans are underway to ensure a smooth transition for Grade 9 students to Grade 10 in 2026.

In addition, TSC is preparing to confirm 46,000 current intern teachers to permanent, pensionable roles by January 2025, backed by an 18.7 billion shilling budget allocation. Interns recently completed a document verification process, which only required a national ID. They will receive confirmation letters and be assigned permanent stations early next year.

The TSC Internship Programme is a one-year initiative designed to help registered, unemployed teachers gain practical experience through mentorship and hands-on teaching. Applications are strictly online, with eligibility requirements as follows:

– Primary School Interns: Must hold a PTE or DPTE certificate and be TSC-registered.

–  Junior School Interns : Must hold at least a diploma, a minimum of C+ in KCSE, and C+ in two teaching subjects, with TSC registration.

Interns will earn a monthly stipend of 15,000 shillings for primary roles and 20,000 shillings for junior secondary roles. Those who complete the program will receive a certificate, providing valuable points toward future permanent positions.

As part of a broader recruitment goal, TSC aims to hire a total of 111,870 teachers by 2028 to meet the national demand for educators across all basic learning institutions.
