These contracted professionals, which include teachers, drivers, and security personnel, play crucial roles during examinations. However, it’s important to note that KNEC only reimburses transport costs and does not compensate for the actual services rendered by invigilators, supervisors, and centre managers.

This year’s national exams will see slight adjustments in pay, following demands from secondary school teachers for better allowances for overseeing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations starting October 22, 2024. Through the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), teachers have called for a staggering increase in their out-of-workstation allowances, seeking raises between 750% and 900%.

Kuppet Secretary-General Akello Misori has proposed a new daily rate of 3,000/- for invigilators, up from the current 400/-—a substantial 750% increase. Supervisors are seeking 3,500/- per day, up from 450/- (a 778% rise), and principals, who also serve as examination centre managers, are requesting 4,500/- per day, compared to their current rate of 500/- (a 900% increase).

“Our members are determined to reject the existing pay structure during the upcoming examinations. As the Cabinet Secretary responsible for the KNEC budget, we urge you to ensure fair compensation for teachers as outlined in the Human Resource Policies and Procedures Manual for the Public Service, the standard benchmark across government,” stated Mr. Misori in his letter.

Payment Breakdown:

– KPSEA Supervisors: 680/- per day for 3 days = 2,040/-

– KPSEA Invigilators: 550/- per day for 3 days = 1,680/-

– KCSE Supervisors: 680/- per day for 16 days = 10,880/-

– KCSE Invigilators: 550/- per day for 16 days = 8,800/-

– Centre Managers: 550/- per day for both KPSEA and KCSE

As the examination period approaches, the spotlight is on whether these payment rates will meet the expectations of educators and provide fair compensation for their essential roles.
