The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the revision of its Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) alongside plans to promote 51,000 teachers, offering much-needed relief to educators who’ve faced stagnation in their careers. In addition, the commission confirmed that interim compensation will be provided for teachers in acting administrative roles, signaling a commitment to addressing long-standing teacher grievances.

During recent discussions, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) ended its strike following the TSC’s announcement of the initial 51,000 promotions, though approximately 130,000 teachers remain affected by stagnation. However, the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) continues its strike, advocating for the conversion of Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to permanent and pensionable status, as well as a review of the professional development criteria, which they believe have contributed to the delay in promotions.

The TSC CEO reassured educators that promotions will continue as funds become available through Parliament’s budgetary allocations. With just eight weeks left until national exams, concerns about recovering lost time and closing learning gaps have grown, underscoring the importance of swift resolution.
This move highlights the commission’s efforts to support teachers and maintain the quality of education in the face of ongoing challenges.
