Key Mandatory Issues Schools Must Address Before Inspection. Mandatory School Inspections: Ensuring Safety Standards Across Kenya.
The Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide inspection of all public and private schools to assess compliance with safety standards. This initiative, spearheaded by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, aims to enforce adherence to the Safety Standards Manual and address recent concerns regarding school safety.

The inspections will involve a collaborative effort from multiple agencies, including the Ministries of Education, Interior, and Health, as well as the Kenya Red Cross and local governments. The primary focus of these inspections is to investigate the alarming rise in school fires, which have resulted in tragic incidents, including a recent fire that claimed the lives of 21 children at Hillside Endarasha Academy.

In his announcement, Ogamba emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure learning environment and warned that officials or school administrators who fail to comply with safety guidelines will face serious consequences. The initial phase of inspections will concentrate on boarding primary and junior secondary schools, followed by secondary schools in the second phase.
