Teachers in urban areas are set to benefit significantly from a recent Ksh 13 billion salary and allowances adjustment by the government, part of the final phase of the 2021–2025 pay deal. According to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), those teaching in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Eldoret will receive the highest housing allowances, which range from Ksh 4,500 to Ksh 50,000.

Nairobi teachers will be particularly pleased with their substantial housing allowance of Ksh 50,000, making them the highest-paid educators in the country. In contrast, the lowest-paid teachers in this category will receive Ksh 6,750 for housing. These updates were detailed in a TSC circular dated August 29, released by TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia.
Teachers in cities such as Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale will receive housing allowances ranging from Ksh 4,500 to Ksh 35,000. The TSC’s recent circular revealed a shift in the classification of teachers from four clusters to three, with Nairobi teachers placed in Cluster One and teachers in other cities grouped in Cluster Two.
Teachers in all other regions now fall under Cluster Three, with monthly housing allowances between Ksh 3,850 and Ksh 25,000. While these housing allowances provide much-needed financial support, especially in high-cost areas, the amounts in Cluster Three may not fully cover housing expenses in urban settings, potentially leading to financial strain for those teachers.
In addition to housing allowances, all TSC teachers will receive commuter, hardship, disability, and annual leave allowances. The updated allowances include:
– **Commuter Allowance**: Ksh 4,000 to Ksh 16,000
– **Annual Leave Allowance**: Ksh 4,000 to Ksh 10,000
– **Disability Allowance**: A flat rate of Ksh 20,000
– **Hardship Allowance**: Ksh 6,600 to Ksh 38,100
These adjustments are expected to enhance the overall financial well-being of teachers and address disparities in the quality of life across different regions.
