In a significant move to address the ongoing issue of understaffing in schools, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a major recruitment drive aimed at hiring more teachers, particularly for junior secondary schools.

During a joint meeting between TSC and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), it was unanimously agreed that many schools are facing severe understaffing. To tackle this problem, the TSC will recruit additional teachers, with a strong focus on junior secondary education.

This decision follows a six-day discussion held at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha, where KUPPET representatives emphasized the urgency of the situation.
Speaking to the press, KUPPET National Chairman Milema Omboko highlighted the pressing need for government action. Omboko stated that an estimated Sh 4 billion is necessary to employ 20,000 teachers, addressing the critical shortage in junior secondary schools.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori further elaborated on the plan, noting that out of the 20,000 newly recruited teachers, 2,000 will be deployed to ASAL (Arid and Semi-Arid Lands) areas. Misori also announced that by January 2025, all 26,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) interns hired in 2023 will transition to permanent and pensionable positions.
