Three high-ranking officials of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) are facing disciplinary action amid serious allegations of attempting to undermine union leadership and using forged documents. The KUPPET Disciplinary Committee has summoned Assistant National Treasurer Ronald Tonui, Tertiary Institutions Secretary Sammy Chelanga, and Bomet Branch Secretary Samuel Orwa to a hearing on October 11, following accusations detailed in a letter dated October 2, 2024.

The officials are charged with sabotaging the union’s operations, fostering division within its ranks, and circulating a fake resignation letter that falsely claimed to be from the Secretary-General. Tonui is specifically accused of disseminating this fraudulent letter and misrepresenting himself as a media representative of the union without authorization.

The letter states, “You are invited to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against you.” Additional allegations against Tonui include bribery of union officials to obtain unauthorized documents and attempting to manipulate the union’s finances and authority.

Samuel Orwa, the Executive Secretary of the KUPPET Migori Branch, faces similar charges of authoring the fake resignation letter and undermining the Secretary-General. The accused officials will have the chance to defend themselves and present witnesses during the hearing. The outcome could significantly impact the leadership and stability of the union moving forward.
