Teachers in major cities are poised to reap significant benefits from the government’s Sh13 billion adjustment to salaries and allowances, marking the final phase of the 2021-2025 pay agreement. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced that educators stationed in key cities—including Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Eldoret—will receive housing allowances ranging from Sh4,500 to Sh50,000.

Nairobi teachers will see the highest gains, with top earners receiving up to Sh50,000 in housing allowances, while those at the lower end will get Sh6,750. This information was shared in an official circular from TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.

In other urban areas such as Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Eldoret, Thika, Kisii, Malindi, and Kitale, housing allowances will range from Sh4,500 to Sh35,000. The TSC has restructured clusters, placing Nairobi in Cluster 1 and other cities in Cluster 2, while all other regions fall into Cluster 3, where allowances range from Sh3,850 to Sh25,000.

While the housing allowance offers much-needed financial relief in high-cost areas, concerns linger about the adequacy of allowances in Cluster 3, potentially placing financial strain on teachers living in these regions. Stakeholders worry about disparities in quality of life due to the varying allowances across clusters.

In addition to housing allowances, teachers will receive commuter, hardship, disability, and annual leave allowances. Commuter allowances will range from Sh4,000 to Sh16,000, and annual leave allowances will be between Sh4,000 and Sh10,000. Teachers with disabilities will receive a flat-rate allowance of Sh20,000, while those in hardship areas can earn between Sh6,600 and Sh38,100.

The circular also details updates to salary scales, with increases ranging from Sh393 to Sh2,570 following previous adjustments in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). However, not all teachers will see these increases; those in pay grades C4, C5, D4, and D5 at the minimum pay level will not benefit.

Under the new agreement, the lowest-paid teachers in Grade B5 will see their salaries rise from Sh22,793 to Sh23,830, while those in job group C1 will receive a Sh1,296 increase, bringing their pay to Sh29,787. Educators in group C2 will earn Sh1,666 more, boosting their salaries to Sh38,286, and those in group C3 will see their pay rise to Sh45,671.

The smallest increase goes to teachers in job group D1, who will gain Sh393, bringing their salary to Sh78,625. Meanwhile, job group D2 teachers will see a Sh1,455 increase, while those in D3 will earn Sh1,399 more, raising their pay to Sh106,043.

This comprehensive salary adjustment marks a positive step for teachers, enhancing their financial stability and acknowledging their essential role in education.
