Interns will benefit from additional points for their internship certifications during hiring, enhancing their chances for permanent roles. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba recently revealed an allocation of Ksh 18.7 billion aimed at confirming these intern teachers, alongside Ksh 13.5 billion for implementing phase two of the teachers’ Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Ogamba emphasized the government’s commitment to improving education standards and ensuring fair compensation for teachers. However, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia noted that the confirmation process for interns has been postponed until January 2025 due to budget constraints. TSC requires Ksh 30 billion to sustain the teachers under the new terms for a full year, while the current funding can only support six months of payments.
Currently, TSC has 46,000 teachers on internship terms, with 21,550 from junior high and 4,000 from primary schools hired in February 2023, among others. In October 2024, TSC plans to recruit an additional 20,000 interns, with 18,000 assigned to junior secondary schools and 2,000 to primary schools. Stay tuned for updates as these changes unfold!
