Currently, JSS interns earn Ksh 20,000 per month, while lower primary instructors make Ksh 15,000. However, they lack monthly allowances or health insurance, which became a major issue during recent protests advocating for better conditions.

The new pay scale is promising for JSS interns, many of whom hold degrees or diplomas. Upon confirmation, they will enter at job group C2, equivalent to senior primary school teachers, with salaries ranging from Ksh 34,955 to Ksh 43,694 per month. Newly hired teachers will start at Ksh 34,955, with automatic increases after three years.

In addition to their base salary, interns in Nairobi will receive a housing allowance of Ksh 16,500 per month, while those in large municipalities will get Ksh 12,800, and Ksh 9,600 in smaller municipalities. A housing stipend of Ksh 7,500 per month will be available for those in other regions, plus a one-time annual stipend of Ksh 6,000.

This salary review is a significant step toward enhancing the living standards of JSS interns, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving education and supporting teachers. Stay tuned for more updates!
