In a powerful response to the heartbreaking loss of 21 students at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri, two prominent advocacy organizations, the Elimu Bora Working Group (EBWG) and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), are demanding the immediate resignation of Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba and Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang. They hold both officials accountable for the failure to ensure student safety, criticizing local authorities for inaction.

EBWG insists that Ogamba and Kipsang, along with the Ministry’s Quality and Standards Assurance Team, must take responsibility for this tragedy. KHRC has echoed these calls, stressing that those overseeing school inspections must be held accountable.

The groups are also advocating for swift action against the Hillside Endarasha Academy administration, emphasizing the need for transparency for affected parents regarding their children’s safety and whereabouts. KHRC is preparing a petition against individuals deemed negligent in enforcing safety standards that contributed to the disaster.

In light of these events, the advocacy groups are pushing for a nationwide review of safety protocols in boarding schools, demanding strict enforcement to avert future tragedies. They assert that it is the Ministry’s duty to uphold safety regulations.

In response, CS Ogamba announced immediate inspections of schools nationwide, aiming to ensure compliance with safety standards and identify causes behind recent incidents, including school fires. He emphasized the need to address current challenges distinct from past issues related to student discipline.

The tragic events at Hillside Endarasha Academy have highlighted the urgent need for safety reforms in schools. Advocacy groups stress that accountability and improved oversight are crucial to protect students and prevent such tragedies from happening again.
