How the New Model Reduces Costs
Under the 2024 University Funding Model, the government will cover a substantial portion of tuition fees. Families will only need to pay between 5% and 40% of the total cost. In some cases, this means university students may pay as little as Ksh3,000 per semester.
Government Commitment
Dr. Inyangala has addressed concerns about affordability, firmly rejecting claims that the new model will make university education out of reach for most families. She emphasized that no child should miss out on university education due to financial reasons.
Government’s Role and Assurance
“There is no reason any child should be unable to access university education,” Dr. Inyangala stated during an event in Shinyalu, Kakamega County. She assured that the government remains committed to supporting families and addressing their diverse needs.
Clarifying Cost Concerns
Amid concerns about rising educational costs, Dr. Inyangala clarified, “We have not increased the cost of university programs.” The government will cover up to 80% of the program costs, while families will contribute the remaining 20%. Additionally, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) will provide further support.
Conclusion
The 2024 University Funding Model promises to make higher education more accessible and affordable for Kenyan families. With significant government support and additional assistance from HELB, the new model aims to reduce financial barriers and ensure that every student can pursue their university education.
