David Obuon, Executive Secretary of the Kisumu KNUT branch, highlighted the disruptions caused by these protests, particularly affecting urban schools reliant on public transportation. This disruption has left many students stranded, exacerbating the situation.
Obuon recounted an incident at a Kisumu school where tear gas forced students and teachers to evacuate, raising serious security concerns and causing distress.
Funding Challenges for School Activities
The union emphasized the critical need for prompt release of capitation funds to ensure smooth school operations, noting struggles faced by ongoing sports and music festivals due to funding shortages.
Obuon also addressed government promises to construct classrooms for grade 9 students, citing uncertainty over fund allocation to schools.
Teacher Employment and Welfare Concerns
Regarding Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, Obuon urged the government to honor its commitment, supported by a court decision, to confirm intern teachers on permanent and pensionable terms. He emphasized the importance of securing teachers’ employment despite the suspended Finance Bill 2024, which has sparked concerns over teacher employment.
Motivation and Management Issues
Obuon argued that well-paid teachers are crucial for providing quality education and emphasized the need for timely salary payments to motivate teachers. He expressed dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Education’s management under Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, criticizing MPs for distributing employment letters at inappropriate venues like funerals, highlighting leadership issues within the ministry.
In summary, KNUT calls for immediate government action to address protests, ensure adequate funding for school activities, and uphold commitments to teacher welfare and employment security amidst ongoing challenges.
