This year, unlike previous years, June salaries were delayed, causing frustration among teachers awaiting their compensation. Traditionally, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) disburses salaries by June 20th, with some teachers receiving their pay as early as June 18th.

The deduction of sh 200 from teachers’ June payslips has sparked reactions among educators this week. The TSC has yet to issue an official statement explaining this deduction, but sources close to the Commission indicate it was an error and assure that the withheld funds will be refunded.

Some teachers speculate that this deduction mirrors past incidents involving the Kenya Women Teachers Association (Kewota), where sh 200 was deducted from both male and female teachers’ salaries for union memberships they had not enrolled in.

In previous instances, discrepancies in net compensation have been a recurring issue for teachers. The TSC had previously uncovered cases where payroll staff made unauthorized deductions from teachers’ salaries, prompting their reassignment to other departments.

Amidst economic challenges marked by inflation and shrinking salaries, teachers are hopeful that the TSC will promptly address this issue to alleviate their concerns. Clear communication from the Commission is crucial during such times of uncertainty.
