Announcement and Relief for Graduate Teachers
Dr. Jamleck Muturi, Chairman of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), announced that 20,000 intern teachers will be hired for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) starting in July. This move brings significant relief to graduate teachers awaiting employment.
Details of the Recruitment Process
During the 47th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Muturi stated that the recruitment process will begin in July. This timing will help ensure a smooth transition for Grade 8 students moving to Grade 9. The TSC will expedite shortlisting and interviews, allowing new teachers to start in September.
Government Support and Financial Allocation
Kimani Kuria, Chair of the Finance Committee of the National Assembly, recently announced the government’s plan to allocate funds to hire 20,000 teachers to address the shortage in JSS institutions nationwide. Kuria stated, “Funds have been allocated to hire 20,000 interns next month. The policy now aims to transition teachers from internship to permanent and pensionable terms.”
Additional Financial Support
The government has also allocated Ksh18.9 billion to convert 46,000 intern teachers to permanent and pensionable status (PnP). This substantial support follows a prolonged standoff between intern teachers and the TSC over employment status, which led to strikes, layoffs, and a pending court case.
Uncertainty Over Funding Sources
Despite these announcements, it remains unclear how the funds for hiring the new interns, as announced by Muturi, will be sourced. However, the commitment to proceed with hiring highlights the TSC’s determination to address teacher shortages and improve education quality.
With TSC confirming 20,000 interns hiring despite the financial bill rejection, the education sector looks forward to significant improvements and stability in the coming months. This will boost many reforms in the education sector.
