In a significant move, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a new policy aimed at supporting teachers struggling with alcoholism and substance abuse.
 Announcement at Kessha Conference
During the 46th Annual National Conference of the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (Kessha) in Mombasa, TSC Chairman Jamleck Muturi unveiled this initiative.

Supportive Wellness Clinic
Muturi highlighted the establishment of a fully equipped wellness clinic staffed with trained medical professionals. This facility will provide three months of free treatment to school administrators battling alcoholism and drug misuse due to workplace stress.
Paid Leave and Rehabilitation
“We recognize substance abuse as a health issue,” Muturi emphasized. Teachers identified with alcohol or drug problems will receive paid leave and access to a rehabilitation center for a three-month period.

Challenges Faced by Principals
Principals face daunting challenges, including increasing student enrollments without adequate financial support. Indimuli Kahi, Kessha Chair, pointed out the strain this places on principals, often leading to stress and substance abuse issues.
Budget Increase and Teacher Recruitment
For the fiscal year 2023–24, TSC’s budget has been boosted to Sh323.7 billion, an increase of Sh24 billion. This includes Sh4.6 billion allocated to hiring 20,000 teacher interns to alleviate the teacher shortage.
 Enhancing Capacity and Training
Muturi also announced investments in principal development (Sh1 billion) and the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) teacher training (Sh1.3 billion). Additionally, over 163,938 instructors nationwide have been trained in remote learning methods to address current educational challenges.
 Call for Resourcefulness
Encouraging principals to be innovative, Muturi urged them to explore income-generating projects such as poultry farming to supplement government funding.
