TSC Begins Recruitment Of Grade 9 Teachers. TSC Begins Recruitment of Grade 9 Teachers: Government Initiatives to Support Education Transition

In a bid to ease the burden of educating Grade 9 students by 2025, the government is set to recruit over 20,000 new teachers. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made this announcement in Bungoma, emphasizing the transition of eighth-graders to ninth grade within primary schools.

To support this transition, the government has tasked every constituency nationwide with specific responsibilities. Machogu highlighted plans for constructing 6,000 classrooms by year-end, supported by a conditional Sh3.4 billion allocation from the National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) in collaboration with the national government.

Furthermore, the World Bank has contributed Sh9 billion towards the construction of an additional 9,000 elementary school classrooms. This funding aims to complete 15,015 classrooms by the end of the year.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is spearheading the recruitment of 20,000 teachers dedicated to Grade 9. Machogu also announced the completion of Grade 9 curriculum materials by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), soon to be accessible to the public.

Addressing misinformation, Machogu clarified that Grade 9 classes will not be transferred to secondary schools in the upcoming academic year. He denied instructing the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to design a new Grade 8 Kenya Primary Placement Examination (KEPPE) for Grade 9 placement, reaffirming the continuity of the current system without introducing a new exam in November.

Additionally, he dismissed rumors of Grade 9 teachers and students being moved to secondary schools under the competency-based curriculum. A fabricated circular suggesting the transfer of junior secondary school teachers from primary to high schools for Grades 9 through 12 was debunked.

Highlighting the urgency of the recruitment, TSC acknowledged a significant shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools. The upcoming hires are crucial to ensuring adequate staffing and the successful implementation of educational initiatives.

By prioritizing these initiatives, the government aims to enhance educational outcomes and facilitate a smooth transition for Grade 9 students across the country.
