Kenyan teachers have been protesting for better salaries for years. Finally, the Kenya National Teachers Union (KNUT) secured a pay increase after prolonged negotiations with the government. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) agreed to the salary hike.
New TSC Grading Scheme
The TSC’s revised grading scheme is now in its third and final phase. This phase started last year and will continue through 2024. The new system has eliminated some job grades and combined others.
 Changes in Grades
For instance, the P1 grade (formerly job group G) was replaced by grade B5. Now, B5 is the entry grade for primary school teachers. Here are the other changes:
– Previous Grade J: Now C1
– Previous Grade K: Now C2
– Previous Grade L: Now C3
– Previous Grade M: Now C4
– Previous Grade N: Now C5
Additionally, new grades were created for higher positions:
– Previous Grade P: Now D1
– Previous Grade Q: Now D2
– Previous Grade R: Now D3
– Previous Grade S: Now D4
– Previous Grade T: Now D5
Designation Codes for New Grades
The new TSC grading system includes specific designation codes:
– Grade B5 (T-Scale 5): Primary Educator II
– Grade C1 (T-Scale 6): Primary Teacher I, Secondary Teacher II, Lecturer III
– Grade C2 (T-Scale 7): Secondary Educator II, Lecturer II, Senior Educator II, Special Needs Educator for Primary Schools
Interns’ Role
Interns, or graduate trainees, will teach for one year. They earn Ksh. 10,000 for primary schools and Ksh. 15,000 for secondary schools.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
The Collective Bargaining Agreement involves TSC, KNUT, and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET). The TSC, a constitutional commission, collaborates with these unions to improve teachers’ terms and services.
Objectives of the 2017-2021 CBA
The main goal was to harmonize negotiations to improve teaching standards. The agreement also outlines various allowances:
– Basic Salary: Implemented over four years.
–Â Commuter Allowance: Varies by grade.
– Reader/Facilitation/Aid Allowance: Ksh. 15,000 monthly for blind or wheelchair-bound teachers.
– Leave Allowance: Paid annually.
– Hardship Allowance: For teachers in designated hardship areas.
Exiting the Teaching Service
Teachers may leave the service through resignation, retirement, redundancy, termination, dismissal, transfer, or death. They will receive a certificate of service upon exit.
 Industrial Action
During industrial action, unions will guide members to maintain professionalism and dignity.
Work Injury Benefits
Teachers injured or dying in service will be compensated according to the Work Injury Benefit Act.
Amendment and Variations
Any modifications to the agreement must be mutually agreed upon and documented in writing. Changes affecting remuneration require SRC’s approval.

This agreement adheres to Kenyan laws.
