 Introduction of New Curriculum
Kenya is transitioning from the 8.4.4 curriculum to a competency-based curriculum. A few years ago, the new curriculum was introduced, and this year, the first class moved to junior secondary school. Currently, primary schools house all junior secondary schools. Consequently, the head teachers of these primary schools serve as interim principals during this transition.
 Interim Principals Since January
Since January, primary school head teachers have been acting as interim principals for junior secondary schools. Over 10,000 elementary school head teachers attended the Kenya Elementary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) general convention in Mombasa, where TSC Updates JSS Principal Qualifications were discussed.
Emphasis on Accountability
The cabinet secretary for education urged head teachers to embrace accountability and ensure the full progression of teacher professional development. Collins Oyuu, the Kenya National Teachers Union secretary general, also attended the convention. He thanked the government for confirming that head teachers would become junior school principals starting in 2024. However, only those with excellent academic credentials will qualify for this opportunity.
 Encouragement for Higher Education
The promise of better opportunities encouraged educators to pursue higher education. Comprehensive school management identified several issues, but the school head teachers are expected to address these challenges. Collins Oyuu also expressed gratitude to the administration for stopping the delocalization of teachers and for assigning additional teachers to support the competency-based curriculum.
Anticipation for Further Information
We expect more information from TSC about promoting P1 teachers to junior school administrator positions. However, sources suggest that confirming head teachers as principals will proceed. TSC faces a challenge in decision-making, as some teachers hold master’s degrees or PhDs but do not occupy administrative positions. We will have to wait and see what the commission decides.
Student Transition in 2024
As per the competency-based curriculum, students in grade 7 will transition to grade 8 in 2024. This transition highlights the need for well-qualified principals to manage junior secondary schools effectively.
The TSC Updates JSS Principal Qualifications for 2025 aim to ensure that only the most qualified educators lead the new junior secondary schools, enhancing the quality of education during this significant curriculum change.
