Introduction

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) faces several demands from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), primarily concerning promotions. The union has urged TSC to promote over a thousand teachers who have been stuck in the same job groups for more than a decade.

 Demands for Promotion

KUPPET’s Secretary General, Akello Misori, stressed the need for automatic promotions for these educators in future promotion exercises. He expressed frustration over the stagnation of these teachers despite their compliance with the career development guidelines (CPG). Misori pointed out that many of these teachers have attended multiple promotion interviews without success.

 Specific Job Groups Affected

The affected teachers include those formerly in job group M, now known as C5, and those in job group C3, formerly known as job group L. These educators have been in the same positions for over ten years, causing significant concern within the teaching community.

 Concerns Raised

During a five-day retreat in Naivasha, Misori voiced his concerns alongside TSC representatives and technical staff. TSC called this meeting in response to KUPPET’s numerous queries about the promotion list released in the previous year. Misori questioned the validity of this list, noting that 14 of the promoted teachers were deceased, and several curriculum support officers and TSC secretariat employees, who are technically not teachers, were also included.

 Union’s Call for Immediate Action

KUPPET presented a list of one thousand teachers who had been in the same job group for more than ten years. The union demanded immediate promotions for these instructors and urged the abolition of the CPG for fair advancement of all teachers.

 Viewing the List

The union’s list of stalled teachers is available on the TSC website. KUPPET continues to advocate for fair treatment and timely promotions to ensure that dedicated educators receive the recognition and advancement they deserve.

By addressing these issues, TSC aims to enhance the morale and career progression of teachers, ensuring a more motivated and efficient educational workforce. The upcoming promotions are a significant step toward resolving long-standing grievances and improving the overall educational environment in Kenya.
