Government Announcement
The government has declared that approximately 26,000 teachers, initially employed on contracts in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in 2023, will transition to permanent and pensionable terms from July 1. This assurance comes as a relief to many teachers who had expressed concerns about their wages, citing them as insufficient to sustain their livelihoods.
Previous Earnings
Previously, JSS interns received a monthly salary of Sh20,000, while those in lower primary schools earned Sh15,000. These intern teachers did not have access to any allowances or health insurance schemes.
Transition to Permanent Terms
With protests subsiding after two weeks, there is anticipation regarding the new earnings of these teachers under permanent and pensionable terms. Most JSS interns hold degrees or diplomas and, upon confirmation, will commence at job group C2, equivalent to a senior teacher at the primary school level.
Salary Details
The salary for job group C2 ranges from Sh34,955 to a maximum of Sh43,694. Newly appointed teachers will start at Sh34,955, with automatic salary increments every three years.
Housing Allowance
In job group C2, housing allowances vary based on location:
– Teachers in Nairobi receive Sh16,500.
– Teachers in major municipalities receive Sh12,800.
– Teachers in minor municipalities receive Sh9,600.
– Teachers in other areas receive Sh7,500.
Additional Allowances
Teachers are also entitled to various allowances, including:
– An annual leave allowance of Sh6,000, paid once a year.
– A commuter allowance of Sh4,000.
– Teachers in hardship areas receive a hardship allowance of Sh10,900.
Health Insurance Scheme
Furthermore, teachers will benefit from the health insurance scheme provided by their employer, ensuring comprehensive coverage for their healthcare needs.
By transitioning JSS interns to permanent and pensionable terms with improved salary packages and benefits, the government aims to enhance the welfare of teachers and promote job stability in the education sector.
