Introduction

The government aims to secure permanent and pensionable contracts for 26,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers starting from June 2024. This initiative was revealed by the Parliamentary Education Committee Chairman, Julius Meli.

Transitioning JSS Interns to Permanent Status

Julius Meli announced that the current intern teachers, who are on temporary contracts, will be absorbed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). This move comes after Parliament allocated the necessary funds. Meli urged JSS teachers to halt their weekly demonstrations and return to their classrooms, reassuring them that their concerns are being addressed.

“Parliament has allocated funds to TSC to hire 26,000 JSS interns on a permanent basis. The remaining interns will be absorbed in the subsequent years. We need the teachers to be patient,” Meli explained.

Financial Constraints and Gradual Absorption

Meli acknowledged the financial constraints that prevent the immediate absorption of all JSS interns. His committee agreed with the National Treasury’s explanation of these limitations.

New Hiring Plans for JSS and TVET Tutors

Speaking at ACK DL St. Marks Preparatory School during an inter-denominational service and choir competition, Meli outlined further hiring plans. He announced that the government will hire a new group of 20,000 JSS intern tutors on one-year contracts after the initial 26,000 are employed. This strategy aims to address the significant teacher shortage in Kenyan schools.

“The government, through the Public Service Commission, will also hire 2,000 TVET trainers in the coming financial year,” Meli added.

Addressing the Teacher Shortage

Kenya currently faces a shortfall of 116,000 teachers. Meli emphasized the government’s commitment to easing the pressure on parents through temporary contracts as they work towards permanent solutions.

 Financial Burden from Previous Administration

Meli also highlighted the financial burden inherited from the previous administration. The Kenya Kwanza administration is currently spending Sh 1.1 trillion in revenues to service debts.

 Conclusion

The plan to transition JSS interns to permanent contracts marks a significant step in addressing the teacher shortage in Kenya. With the government’s continued efforts and new hiring plans, the future looks promising for JSS intern teachers and the overall education sector.
