Next Holiday’s Teachers’ TPD Training . Preparing for the Next Holiday’s Teachers’ TPD Training.
Introduction
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has urged teachers to get ready for the upcoming session . This session is mandatory Teacher Professional Development (TPD) training program. This program, scheduled to take place in various approved institutions. It has gained significant government support this year, aiming to enhance the quality of teaching and learning experiences across schools.
 Commission’s Call to Action
In February 2024, the commission formally invited education institutions interested in providing training to teachers to submit their applications to host the training sessions. This nationwide exercise is expected to commence from December 2024, coinciding with the long December holiday period when schools are closed.
Funding Uncertainties
However, it remains unclear whether teachers will continue to bear the sponsorship costs for this program or if the government will take on the financial burden. Many teachers recall President William Ruto’s campaign promise in 2022 to cover the training costs for all teachers, particularly emphasizing the importance of teacher capacity building and Continuous Professional Development.
Evolution of TPD Training
Introduced in September 2021, the TPD training for teachers is now entering its third year, despite initial protests from teachers during the program’s launch. Four universities, including Riara University and Kenya Education Management Institute, were selected to offer professional training to teachers, with Mt Kenya University and Kenyatta University completing the quartet.
Financial Obligations
Teachers enrolled in the TPD training program were required to pay an annual fee of sh 6,000 for six modules, each lasting five years to complete. Training sessions were often held in the evenings and at night to accommodate teachers’ schedules, and successful participants received certificates upon completing five areas of the introductory module.
Conclusion
As teachers gear up for the next round of TPD training, the government’s role in funding remains a point of contention. Nevertheless, the program’s continued evolution underscores its importance in enhancing teacher capacity and ultimately improving the quality of education in schools nationwide.
