Protesting Employment Conditions:

In Bomet County, over 200 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers, led by the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), voiced their discontent with the government’s handling of their employment status. The JSS intern teachers ceased their work, citing dissatisfaction with the government’s failure to confirm them into permanent and pensionable positions, despite receiving a meager salary of Sh17,000.

Demand for Resolution:

KUPPET Vice Chairman, Peter Bett, conveyed the teachers’ ultimatum to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), asserting that services would not resume until their grievances were addressed. He highlighted a court ruling deeming the internship and contract terms illegal, urging compliance from both TSC and the government. Furthermore, he called for compensation for the JSS teachers dating back to February last year.

Questioning Contract Employment:

Bett questioned the government’s reluctance to employ qualified teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, as mandated by the Constitution. He raised concerns about reports of politicians influencing employment decisions, emphasizing the need for fair and transparent hiring practices.

Corruption Allegations:

The unionists accused the TSC of rampant corruption, alleging that securing permanent employment required a bribe of Sh400,000. KUPPET Treasurer, Joseph Bett, demanded transparency from TSC officials regarding these claims.

Facing Consequences for Rights:

JSS spokesman, Mungen Kipruto, expressed willingness to risk dismissal for advocating their employment rights. They affirmed their resolve to pursue justice in the Labour Court and refused to continue teaching under unfavorable conditions.

Call for Presidential Intervention:

The unionists called upon President William Ruto to intervene, cautioning that unresolved issues could disrupt learning nationwide.

In Summary:

KUPPET stands firm against the TSC, demanding fair treatment for JSS teachers and exposing allegations of bribery and corruption within the education sector. They seek justice and transparency, refusing to back down until their concerns are addressed.
