Introduction

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission, is actively considering redeploying secondary school teachers, focusing on subject combinations. This initiative is in response to the ongoing implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which is reshaping the educational landscape.

CBC Curriculum Impact

With the continuous development of the CBC curriculum, significant changes are anticipated. The upcoming academic year will witness the elimination of form one enrolment. Under the new framework, secondary schools will be classified into junior secondary and senior secondary levels.

School Classification

The proposed classification includes Arts and Humanities Schools, Creative Arts and Sports Schools, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Centers. National schools are slated to transition into STEM Centers, while county schools will be designated as centers for sports and creative arts.

Sub-County Schools

Sub-county schools, under the proposal, will focus on humanities and arts subjects. However, it’s crucial to note that these plans are subject to adoption and implementation.

Ministry’s Assurance

The Ministry of Education urges all stakeholders to remain patient as efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition. With one year remaining to finalize preparations, the ministry is committed to the successful implementation of the CBC curriculum.

Principal Secretary’s Statement

Education Principal Secretary, Belio Kipsang, recently addressed the current categorization of schools. He emphasized that the government is phasing out the national categorization of secondary schools. Speaking at the Inaugural Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment, he asserted that the classification of schools based on national, extra-county, county, or sub-county status will cease.

New Basis for School Classification

According to the Principal Secretary, senior schools will be identified based on the learning areas they offer and the available infrastructure. This shift will redefine how schools are categorized, with a focus on subject offerings and resources.

Focus on STEM

Under the proposed classification, national schools will prioritize STEM subjects, aligning with the growing emphasis on science and technology education. This strategic realignment aims to equip students with the skills needed for a rapidly evolving world.
