CBC Senior School Subjects . Understanding the CBC Senior School Curriculum in Kenya.
Transitioning to Competency-Based Education
Kenya’s education system is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting from the old 8-4-4 Curriculum to the new 2-6-3-3-3 system. The cornerstone of this transition is the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which has been implemented, with the inaugural class now in grade 8.
Evolution of Learning Areas
Under the CBC, new learning areas have been introduced, aligning with the curriculum’s competency-driven approach. The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has meticulously reviewed and approved textbooks for these subjects, ensuring their relevance and quality.
Streamlining the Curriculum
Recognizing the challenges posed by the initial array of learning areas, the government, in collaboration with KICD, opted to consolidate them, reducing the workload for both teachers and students. Currently, there are nine compulsory learning areas in junior schools, simplifying the curriculum and enhancing its manageability.
Preparation for Senior School
Looking ahead, the KICD is diligently preparing curriculum designs for senior school, as the first cohort is slated to transition in 2026. This phase aims to refine the senior school experience, focusing on core subjects and providing students with pathways that align with their abilities and interests.
Comprehensive Review Process
As part of this comprehensive overhaul, the KICD is conducting a thorough review of 46 subjects, ensuring their relevance and effectiveness in the CBC framework. These subjects encompass a wide range of disciplines, from languages to sciences, technology, and vocational studies.
