Introduction

Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, announced on Thursday that schools in certain regions may not reopen due to heavy rains. Affected areas include Tana River, Homa Bay, and Kisumu counties. Machogu stressed that these schools will not resume classes and alternative learning methods will be explored for affected students. He made these statements during an inspection of Karen C Secondary School in Nairobi.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Preparation and Challenges

Machogu also mentioned that 95 per cent of schools nationwide are ready for the second term. Additionally, the ministry plans to shorten the August holiday to ensure syllabus completion. The decision to delay school reopening from May 6 to May 13 was made in response to widespread heavy rains across the country. The Ministry of Education is expected to provide specific directives regarding affected schools and areas. This will give a clear guidelines to the government about reopening.

 

 

 

 

 

A survey revealed that over 1,900 schools have been impacted by flooding, some completely submerged. To address these challenges and prepare for school reopening, Ndindi Nyoro, Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, assured that Parliament would not restrict spending on flood mitigation measures.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Parliamentary Support for Flood Mitigation

Nyoro affirmed that all expenses related to flood mitigation would be approved by Parliament. The government previously requested Ksh10.6 billion to address the damage caused by the ongoing deluge affecting the nation.
