Introduction

JSS teachers in Tigania Central and Imenti North of Meru County stand firm in their decision not to resume classes. They will down their tools until the government grants them permanent employment. Disappointed by the government’s failure to confirm their permanent and pensionable status . This is after two years as interns the teachers. They accused  the authorities of exploiting their services.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Discontent Among JSS Teachers

Led by Gikundi Karutui, these teachers express frustration with the government. The  inaction of the government in addressing their concerns and fulfilling its promise to confirm approximately 26,000 teachers on permanent contracts. Karutui adamantly states that they will not return to classrooms . He said that they will strike until the government compensates them for their underpaid work .

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Demand for Answers and Action

Dissatisfied with their situation, the teachers visit their respective Teachers Service Commission (TSC) offices to demand answers and immediate action. Carolyne Gakii, one of the affected teachers, asserts their determination to continue striking until their grievances are addressed, citing their inability to sustain their services while receiving inadequate wages through the intern program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Allegations of Discriminatory Practices

Moreover, they accuse the TSC of employing discriminatory practices in hiring JSS teachers. Karutui calls for transparency from the TSC in the hiring process, questioning the criteria that led to 2016 graduates being placed on internships while 2023 graduates were hired on permanent and pensionable terms, hinting at potential corruption.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Urging Adherence to Court Rulings

The teachers urge the TSC to adhere to court rulings from the Employment and Labor Relations Court and demand clarification on the deviation from the previously established formula for teacher employment based on years of graduation, voiced by Miriti Avezi. They also call for a clear timeline for contracts and emphasize the commission’s obligation to prioritize teachers’ welfare.
