Introduction

Amid ongoing flooding, the government has decided to extend the dates for the second and third terms of the current academic year.

 

 

 

 

 

Impact on School Calendar

Originally, nursery, primary, and secondary schools were supposed to start their second term on April 29. However, due to the flooding, the reopening was postponed until May 6.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

No Disruption to National Exams

Despite the changes, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education test, set to commence in November for Form Four applicants, remains unaffected.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

President’s Announcement

In a recent national address, President William Ruto announced the indefinite postponement of all school reopenings. However, details about the continuity of online learning were not provided.

 

 

 

 

 

Assurance from Education Cabinet Secretary

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu assured the public that online learning can continue, despite limitations in learning devices. Efforts are underway to ensure uninterrupted education.

 

 

 

 

 

Encouragement to Students

Machogu encouraged students, especially Form Fours, to stay engaged in their studies while at home.

 

 

 

 

 

Academic Calendar Overview

The academic calendar for this year included a 13-week first term from January 8 to April 5, with a mid-term break from February 29 to March 3, followed by a three-week holiday from April 6 to 28.

 

 

 

 

 

Disruption to Second Term

The second term, originally scheduled for 14 weeks from April 29 to August 2, faces indefinite postponement due to the flooding situation.

 

 

 

 

Third Term Details

The third term, set to start on August 26 and run for nine weeks until October 25, remains unchanged.

 

 

 

 

 

National Examinations

National examinations, including KPSEA and KILEA, are scheduled for October 28 to 31. However, there will be no KCPE candidates this year due to the phasing out of the 8-4-4 system.

 

Assurance on KCSE Exams

Machogu clarified that the KCSE exams will proceed as planned, expressing optimism that the situation will improve soon, allowing schools to reopen.
