Machogu’s School Reopening Directive . Machogu’s School Reopening Directive: Addressing Flood-affected Schools.
Directive from Ministry of Education:
The Education Cabinet Secretary, CS Ezekiel Machogu, issued a directive on Friday regarding schools severely affected by floods. These schools are instructed to remain closed until the flood situation is under control.
Impact of Floods:
Machogu highlighted the significant impact of severe floods on several schools, rendering it impossible for learners to resume regular classes. The Ministry emphasized the need for alternative infrastructure before resuming learning activities in severely affected schools.
Recovery Strategies:
Affected school management is urged to devise strategies to recover lost time once learning resumes. Meanwhile, learners are advised to stay safe at home, with school heads and parents tasked with ensuring their safety during this period.
Relocation and Alternative Accommodation:
Efforts are underway to relocate people and families sheltering in schools to alternative accommodations ahead of the upcoming reopening dates for Term 2. Field education officers, working alongside local government officials, are facilitating the immediate allocation of alternative housing for those displaced by the ongoing rains.
Ensuring Academic Continuity:
The displacement of individuals seeking refuge in schools poses a challenge to regular academic activities. Regional education officers have been tasked with implementing measures to ensure uninterrupted learning, including resource sharing among neighboring schools and implementing multi-grade and multi-shift education models.
Safety Measures:
Boards of management are cautioned against risking students’ lives by accommodating them in unsafe buildings. CS Machogu urged all boards of management and teachers to prioritize placing learners in safe school shelters.
County Education Boards’ Responsibilities:
All County Education Boards (CEBs) are instructed to convene urgent meetings to assess the situation and submit comprehensive reports to the Cabinet Secretary by May 10th, 2024. These reports will inform further actions to support flood-affected schools and communities.
