School Reopening Further Postponed .
School Reopening Further Postponed . Postponement of School Reopening until Further Notice.
President’s Directive:
In his recent address to the nation on April 3rd, 2024, Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto has issued a directive to the Ministry of Education. He instructed them to postpone the reopening of schools until further notice. This decision comes as a response to the prevailing circumstances. This comes after the opening of schools was postponed by one week to 6th May due to the ongoing floods. But it has again been postponed as floods becomes more dangerous in many parts of Kenya.
Previous Postponement:
Just last week, on Sunday, the Ministry of Education CS had announced the postponement of school reopening to May 6th, 2024. However, the recent directive supersedes this previous announcement.
Reason for Postponement:
The primary reason behind this postponement is the severe torrential rainfall and flooding that have gripped various parts of the country. The concern arises from the potential risk posed to the safety of both students and teachers under such conditions.
Submission of Reports:
To assess the extent of damages and formulate effective mitigation plans, all relevant reports must be submitted no later than May 8, 2024. County Education Boards have been tasked with convening urgent meetings and providing comprehensive reports by May 10, 2024.
Ongoing Updates:
In ensuring timely and accurate information dissemination, regional education directors are mandated to provide continuous updates on the status of schools. These updates are to be aligned with weather forecasts issued by the Meteorological Department.
Safety Precautions:
Above all, the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and the entire school community remain the top priority. The National Parents Association fully supports the government’s decision to prioritize safety assessments before considering any reopening. In the event that conditions are deemed unsafe, students are advised to continue staying at home until the situation improves.
