Introduction:

In response to teachers’ unions’ persistent calls for salary hikes, the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) successfully negotiated with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to implement salary increases for teachers in phases. Now, let’s delve into the specifics of the new TSC job groups and their corresponding salary scales effective 2024. This salary increment will enable teachers to navigate through the hard financial crisis in Kenya.

 

 

 

TSC Job Groups and Salary Scales:

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is responsible for managing teachers in public schools in Kenya. The commission is also responsible for teacher’s discipline in schools. Here’s a breakdown of the new grading system for instructors:

 

 

 

Implementation Phases:

The new salary scales are being rolled out in two phases, with the first phase starting on July 1st, 2023, and the second phase on July 1st, 2024, for actively serving teachers.

 

 

 

Basic Salary:

C1 Teachers, including Lecturer III, Secondary Teacher III, and Primary Teacher I, now have a salary scale ranging from Ksh. 28,491 to Ksh. 35,614.

 

C4 Teachers, such as Senior Lecturer IV, Senior Master IV, SNE Senior Teacher, SNE Teacher I, and Deputy Headteacher II, earn between Ksh. 52,308 and Ksh. 67,220.

 

 

 

Secondary School Teachers:

Secondary school teachers, starting from Secondary Teacher III, earn a salary ranging from Ksh. 35,614, while Principals receive Ksh. 127,069 per month.

 

 

 

Types of Allowances:

TSC provides two types of allowances: Remunerative Allowance, which is paid monthly along with the salary, and Reimbursable Allowance, paid upon application for expenses incurred during official duties.

Primary Teachers:

Primary school teachers earn a basic salary starting from Ksh. 28,491, with Headteachers earning up to Ksh. 78,667 per month.

Highest Paid Teachers:

In post-primary institutions, Chief Principals receive the highest salaries ranging from Ksh. 131,380 to Ksh. 159,534 per month.
