Oyuu Warns Intern Teachers . Primary Interns Advised Against Joining JSS Protests.

 

 

Caution from KNUT:

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has cautioned primary school interns against participating in protests organized by junior secondary school (JSS) teachers. The warning was issued by KNUT’s secretary general Collins Oyuu. This comes as a result of a nationwide demonstrations by JSS Intern Teachers over salary.

 

 

Context:

This advice follows a nationwide announcement on April 29th by the Kenyan Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), advocating for a peaceful protest. The intern teachers have been demonstrating over what they called oppression by the Kenyan government on matters dealing salary increment.

 

 

 

Reason for Caution:

The cautionary note stems from a recent ruling by the Employment & Labour Relations Court concerning the employment status of JSS teachers hired as interns by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), prompting the planned demonstration.

 

 

 

Active Involvement:

In a memo dated April 26, 2024, Collins Oyuu, Secretary General of KNUT, underscored the importance of primary teacher interns, emphasizing their teaching responsibilities. But he also warned them that they may face harsh consequences over the ongoing demonstrations.

 

 

 

Appeal for Restraint:

“We urge all union members, especially primary teacher interns, to abstain from participating in the upcoming JSS demonstrations,” Oyuu stated.

 

 

 

Future Assurance:

KNUT assured its members that by January 2025, the TSC is actively working to regularize their employment status to permanent and pensionable terms.

 

 

 

Ensuring Educational Continuity: 

Oyuu stressed the necessity of maintaining continuity in JSS classes and urged elementary teachers to ensure learning persists even without JSS instructors.

 

 

 

Bridging the Educational Gap:

Highlighting the pivotal role of primary teachers in addressing the shortage of JSS instructors, KNUT reiterated its commitment to advocating for teachers’ rights and welfare.
