Mandatory Holiday TPD Training . Empowering Teachers: TSC’s Call for Mandatory Holiday TPD Training.
Introduction:
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) urges educators to gear up for the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) training program . The program is set to take place at accredited centers nationwide. Unlike previous years, the Kenyan government now backs this initiative, prioritizing the enhancement of teaching quality across all schools.
Preparation and Application:
To ensure seamless execution, The Teacher Service Commission’s (TSC) invited educational institutions interested in hosting the training to submit their applications by February 14, 2024. Successful applicants will commence the training program in December 2024, coinciding with the school holiday period. After application the applications will be reviewed by the teacher service commission.
Funding Uncertainty:
Despite the announcement, it remains unclear whether teachers will bear the subscription costs or if the government will shoulder the burden. Teachers look to the president, who pledged during his 2022 campaign to support teacher training expenses. The expenses includes Continuous Professional Development.
Program Evolution:
TPD was introduced by TSC in September 2021 amid teacher protests. Selected institutions, including Riara University and the Kenya Education Management Institute, were tasked with providing professional training. Mt Kenya University and Kenyatta University also joined the initiative, expanding its reach across Kenya.
Cost and Modules:
Previously, teachers enrolled in the TPD program paid an annual fee of sh 6,000 for six modules, each spanning several years. Training sessions, often held in the evenings and at night, covered key areas such as Teacher Professionalism, CBC Pedagogy, Assessment, School Health and Safety, and Instructional Leadership.
Conclusion:
As TSC gears up for another round of TPD training, educators stand poised to enhance their skills and contribute to a thriving educational landscape. The commitment to continuous professional development underscores the government’s dedication to fostering excellence in teaching and learning nationwide.
