April Teachers’ Strike Threat . Ministry of Education Prepares for Grade 10 Transition under Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
Transition to Senior School
The Ministry of Education is getting ready to enroll the first batch of Grade 10 students into Senior School for a three-year period, implementing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) from 2026. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu assured Senators on Wednesday that the shift from the 8-4-4 system to CBC would proceed seamlessly, with all necessary arrangements in place for the Senior School’s start in January 2026.
Infrastructure and Resources
Machogu emphasized that the ministry thoroughly evaluated infrastructural needs, focusing on classrooms and laboratories, aligning them with available secondary school facilities. He expressed confidence that existing resources would adequately support the educational requirements of the anticipated Grade 10 cohort.
Teacher Recruitment and Training
Addressing the need for qualified educators, Machogu highlighted the ministry’s intensified recruitment efforts since 2022, hiring 56,750 teachers across primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels. He informed the Senators about ongoing initiatives to enhance educators’ skills through retraining programs, ensuring effective CBC implementation.
Curriculum Development
Machogu underscored the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development’s (KICD) role in developing the curriculum framework tailored for Grade 10 learners, providing a structured guide for their educational journey.
Pathways in Senior School
Responding to inquiries about pathways in Senior School, Machogu confirmed three options: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); Social Sciences (humanities); and Performing Arts, Music, and Athletics. These pathways aim to facilitate specialization and talent development among students, recognizing individual strengths and interests.
Specialization Plans
Regarding specialization in Senior Schools, Machogu indicated that the ministry is formulating a plan. A sessional paper addressing this matter has been prepared for parliamentary discussion, which would determine the way forward. He refrained from preempting the debate, acknowledging that parliamentary deliberation on the sessional paper would provide clarity.
