In response to recent developments, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) unveiled a list of more than 36,500 teachers who successfully completed interviews and earned promotions. However, concerns raised by the Kenya Union of Primary Teachers (KNUT) . This concerns have shed light on the exclusion of 15,858 eligible individuals from these promotions. The exclusion of this big number of teachers by TSC has lead to public uproar. This concerns are aimed to trigger action from the commission on matters dealing promotions.
KNUT’s Concerns and Action
KNUT’s deputy secretary general, Hezbon Otieno, announced that the union’s plan to file a petition regarding the omission of such number of teachers. The TSC is expected to address this petition. Otieno emphasized that despite being eligible, certain teachers had been overlooked, some of whom had been stagnant in a certain job group for over 12 years.
Impact of Promotion Delays
During branch elections in Bomet, Otieno, KNUT’s first deputy national chairman, expressed concern over teachers retiring without receiving promotions. He stressed that the absence of promotions demoralizes teachers, impacting their effectiveness in delivering education as expected by the government. He urged the government through TSC to look into the matter as early as possible to contain the situation.
Current Promotion Status
As the second term commences, approximately 36,000 teachers have been promoted, with an additional 6,000 awaiting promotions to the junior school level, as per the TSC’s report.
