Introduction:

The Kenyan government, led by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, has finalized a new policy. This is  to regulate the use of school buses. Among its provisions is the mandatory installation of CCTV cameras. This is aimed at enhancing student safety.

CCTV Installation and Enhanced Safety Measures:

Murkomen disclosed that the policy advocates for the installation of stop arms on school buses. This practice is common in countries like the United States. Additionally, all school buses will now be required to have attendants onboard to further ensure the safety of children, particularly those commuting to preschools and primary schools.

Technological Integration for Monitoring:

The implementation of CCTV cameras will serve as a crucial tool in monitoring student safety during transit. Furthermore, a tracking technology will be integrated into all school vehicles to monitor their movements while on the roads. Murkomen assured the public that Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is in the final stages of setting standards for these devices, ensuring their effectiveness and reliability.

Regulatory Measures for Accident Prevention:

In response to the escalating rate of accidents, Murkomen announced additional measures to enhance road safety. Mandatory medical tests for all drivers, along with retesting for drivers and conductors of Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), will be enforced. National Police Service and NTSA will intensify nationwide enforcement efforts to restrict unroadworthy vehicles and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Conclusion:

The tragic accidents, such as the recent incident at Kapsabet Boys, underscore the urgent need for comprehensive safety measures in school transportation. By implementing mandatory CCTV installation and other regulatory initiatives, the government aims to safeguard the lives of students and educators on the road.
