Introduction
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) announces the closure of the application portal for P1 teachers to junior school roles. This move follows the advertisement of 6,000 deployment slots for current primary school teachers with secondary education degrees. The deadline for applications is March 18, 2024. Qualified primary school teachers interested in teaching Grades 7, 8, and 9 are encouraged to submit applications before the portal closes at midnight tomorrow.
Deployment Plan and Verification Process
The Commission plans to deploy a third batch of qualified PTE teachers to junior schools starting in May 2024. Subsequently, teachers will undergo document verification by their Sub-County Directors before school postings. The Commission will conduct thorough scrutiny at headquarters to ensure only qualified teachers with valid credentials are posted.
Addressing Teacher Shortages in Junior Secondary Schools
Chief Executive Nancy Macharia emphasizes the significant shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools, with a current count of 56,928 teachers against a need for 99,045. The TSC urges eligible teachers to apply for deployment before the deadline to address this shortfall.
Eligibility Criteria and Verification Process
Eligible primary school teachers seeking deployment to junior secondary schools must be actively registered with the Teachers Service Commission, employed as primary school teachers, and not under any disciplinary process. They should hold at least a Diploma in Education with specified grades in relevant subjects or a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Bachelor of Education (Primary Option) holders are ineligible. During verification, candidates must present various documents, including original and copies of their degree/diploma certificates, academic transcripts, SNE qualifications (if applicable), KCSE certificate, current payslip, and a declaration from the Head of Institution confirming their employment status.
Streamlining Processes for Salary Commencement
Past deployments experienced delays in salary commencement. To address this, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia issued directives to streamline posting and reporting processes, emphasizing the use of online platforms and eliminating hard copy submissions.
Salary and Allowance Structure
Deployed teachers will receive salaries based on their job groups (C1, C3, and C4), with additional allowances such as house, hardship, and commuter allowances. Degree certificate holders will start in job group C2 for three years before automatic progression to job group C3.
Inclusivity and Addressing Diverse Educational Needs
Teachers with Special Need Education (SNE) qualifications will be assigned to special junior secondary schools, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity and addressing diverse educational needs.
