Knut’s Demand for Transparency

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) is urging  TSC to provide clarity on the list of 36,505 promoted teachers. Knut’s move comes in response to widespread skepticism among teachers regarding the fairness of the promotion process.

Concerns and Discontent

Numerous teachers have expressed shock and dissatisfaction upon discovering that junior colleagues with recent TSC numbers were promoted, while those with many years of service were overlooked. Knut is demanding that the Commission disclose the names of the successfully promoted teachers instead of merely providing a list containing TSC numbers.

Call for Action from Knut Secretary General

Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of Knut, has instructed branch executive secretaries to compile information on teachers who applied for promotion but were not successful. Oyuu emphasizes the importance of addressing these concerns and requests the data to be submitted by March 11, 2024, ahead of a meeting in Nakuru.

TSC’s Publication and Disappointment

The TSC recently published the list of promoted teachers on its website following interviews held in December and January. However, this move left thousands of applicants disappointed, as they were not considered for promotion despite attending interviews.

Voice of the Affected

Expressing his frustration, a teacher from Elgeyo Marakwet lamented being overlooked for promotion despite being shortlisted consistently. Feeling demoralized by the situation, he contemplates early retirement, having not been promoted since 2011 despite attending interviews in 2017, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

Stagnation and Financial Constraints

Teachers’ unions have highlighted the issue of many members remaining in the same grades for extended periods. The TSC attributes this stagnation to financial constraints, stating that promotions have been limited due to insufficient funds. While the TSC was allocated only Sh1 billion for promotions in the current financial year, it had requested Sh2.2 billion.
