Introduction:

Kenyan teachers, especially those in the early stages of their careers, have reasons to rejoice . This comes after  the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) takes significant steps to alleviate teacher shortages and enhance the education sector.

Confirmation Bonanza:

More than 25,000 teachers from primary and junior secondary schools who have fulfilled their internship obligations can anticipate confirmation for permanent and pensionable (PNP) positions this year, providing long-awaited job security and stability.

Eligibility Criteria:

Only intern teachers who diligently renewed their internship contracts and actively participated in the program will be considered for confirmation. Priority will be given to the 20,000 teachers recruited in February 2023.

Salary Grades Reflect Qualifications:

Newly confirmed teachers will be assigned appropriate salary grades based on their qualifications. Graduate interns with teaching degrees will start in job group C2, while those with PTE certificates will begin in grade B5.

Budgetary Allocation:

The government’s commitment to strengthening the teaching force is evident in the allocation of funds within the 2024-2025 budget. These funds will facilitate the confirmation of existing interns and the recruitment of an additional 20,000 new teachers.

Addressing Shortages:

Efforts directly target the critical challenge of teacher shortages, particularly in newly established junior secondary schools. Dr. Nancy Macharia, the TSC CEO, emphasized the significant disparity between required and serving teachers in junior secondary schools, highlighting how new confirmations and recruitment will bridge the gap.

Standardized Internship Period:

Under President William Ruto, the government has implemented a standardized two-year internship period across sectors, ensuring consistent expectations and easing the transition into permanent positions for new teachers.
