Introduction:

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken a significant step in addressing the shortage of Junior Secondary School JSS teachers. This is  by opening applications for hiring and deployment. The announcement, posted on TSC’s social media platform yesterday, invites interested individuals to submit deployment requests by March 18 2044.

 Response to Knut’s Concerns

This move follows concerns raised by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu. Oyuu recently addressed the National Assembly Committee on Education, highlighting the need for teachers to have access to crucial career advancements. He emphasized that TSC possesses exclusive data on various aspects of teacher employment, including career progression, promotion, upgrading, and remuneration, all of which are crucial for professional mobility and budgetary planning.

Scrutiny from the Education Committee

During the committee session, led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, Knut faced scrutiny regarding its commitment to advancing teachers’ interests.  As JSS Application Now Opens , MPs expressed dissatisfaction, particularly with the union leaders’ response to questions about accessing TSC data. Despite assertions from Knut that accessing such data was challenging, the committee pressed for more comprehensive answers.
