Introduction:
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently unveiled 6,000 deployment vacancies targeting current primary school teachers. This is to teachers holding a degree in secondary education. The commission urges eligible candidates to submit their applications before the March 18, 2024 deadline.
Criteria for Deployment
To qualify for deployment to the junior secondary school section, primary school teachers must fulfill specific requirements. These include active registration with the TSC, current employment as a primary school teacher with the commission, and possession of a minimum Diploma in Education with at least a C+ grade at KCSE.
Submission of Documents
During the verification process, applicants must provide various documents, such as the original and copies of their degree/diploma certificates, academic transcripts, Special Needs Education (SNE) qualification (if applicable), KCSE certificate, current payslip, and a declaration by the Head of Institution confirming their current employment status.
Deployment Process and Challenges
The first batch of P1 teachers has already received their posting letters to junior secondary schools. However, delays were encountered in some teachers receiving their new salaries. In response to this issue, TSC CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia issued directives to expedite the payment process for the deployed teachers.

Dr. Macharia emphasized the importance of utilizing online processes for posting, entry, and exit reports. She urged County Directors, Sub County Directors, and Headteachers to adhere strictly to these guidelines to streamline operations.

Addressing Teacher Shortage
The Commission is actively working towards addressing the shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools. Efforts are underway to deploy more qualified teachers to meet the increasing demand.
Salary Details and Progression
Deployed teachers will receive various allowances along with their basic salary, including house allowance, hardship allowance, commuter allowance, and leave allowance. Teachers holding degree certificates will be placed in job group C2 for three years before progressing automatically to job group C3. Meanwhile, those with diplomas in job group B5 will start at job group C1 and advance to job group C2 after three years.
